Makeup hoarding: it is something that we can all relate to. The thought of parting with any product that you may use in the future is difficult; but unfortunately, keeping old makeup is not a good habit to get into.

For example, did you know that liquid based makeup and eyeliners are particularly prone to bacteria? Consequently, this could lead to negative effects for your eyes. At The Brow Bar, we have gathered the top five tips for knowing when it is the right time to be ‘out with the old and in with the new’ when it comes to makeup products.

  1. Label the item with the date you bought it to keep track of how long you are holding onto the product for: unlike food, most products don’t come with a predetermined expiry date, so it is best to keep track on your own.
  2. If it begins to smell strange, it is more than likely time to toss!
  3. If the product stops applying like it used to, this is usually an indication that you may need to purchase a new one.
  4. The general rule with mascara is to acquire a new one after three months. This is not a rigid time frame, but generally can be used as a good indication.
  5. Sometimes when you have been very unwell, your makeup may have picked up germs. It is better to be overcautious than run the risk of infection, so if you feel that you need to replace some products, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do so.

Whenever it comes to products that are put on your face, it is essential that exemplar hygiene precautions be followed to avoid unusual breakouts or infections on the skin. Therefore, if your makeup case is starting to get a little overcrowded, and you cannot remember the last time you undertook a beauty product de-clutter, we recommend following these simple tips.
